One thing to look for in an exercise professional is certification from a recognized organization. Here are the Canadian organizations and the types of certification they offer.

 

Canadian Society for Exercise  Physiology (CSEP)

  • CSEP Certified Personal Trainer
    • Does fitness assessments, interprets results, provides lifestyle counseling, develops exercise programs and functions as a personal trainer.
    • Works in health and fitness centres with healthy people of all ages.
    • Requires a 2 year college diploma or university degree credits.

 

  • CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist
    • Focuses on health, fitness, sport and rehabilitation.
    • Works with people who are healthy, people who have medical conditions and athletes of all ages.
    • Does assessments, prescribes exercises, supervises exercises, counsels and educates.
    • Requires a university degree.

Can-Fit-Pro
  • Personal Trainer Specialist
    • Designs and assists with safe and useful workouts for healthy people in the general population.
    • Specialized certifications are available that focus on people with health concerns.
    • No university degree required.

 

  • Advanced Personal Trainer Specialist
    • Requires Personal Trainer Specialist certification.
    • This is the next level of education for personal trainers so they have more knowledge and skills.
    • No university degree required.
